I am new to this board. I was going to the lapband board, but guess what? My band slipped and I have decided to have RNY. I am 55. I had a lapband May09 and lost a grand total of 50 lbs. I don't really know when my band slipped. It slipped up, not down. I had no symptoms other than no weight loss. I decided to have a fill and the surgeon insisted I have a barium swallow since I had not been in for a yr. I agreed it was needed and the barium swallow revealed that I had no pouch The lapband was just sitting at the top of my stomach and the end of the esophagus. So far the esophagus was not enlarged. The surgeon removed all the fill (Thank God there was not much restriction :P ), and gave me my option choices. I think the slip happened when I had a very severe case of vomiting one night due to a virus??? I don't think I want to have the lapband reattached. I have read so many horror stories lately. My daughter had a RNY with good results. I have been reading the good, the bad and the ugly of all the procedures and think the RNY is the best choice for me. I have an appointment 2/8 to discuss it with the surgeon and hopefully get the process started. In the meantime, I will be lurking. :) Good luck to everyone having this surgery and I will check in when I have more info. I am sure I will have some questions later.

Hello BMooney...My band slipped too TWICE! You're right in not having it reattached or corrected. I went that route and after the revision never had the band fill right again. It was either too tight or too lose, to the point where I always felt sick and struggled with losing anything. I ended up with a severe prolaps to where I was basically cooking from the inside out because of all the acid. My band was no longer pointing toward my left shoulder it was looking toward my left foot, that's how bad it was. I was in the process of RNY going through the tests, motions etc got it all done then bingo....bariatric group wanted me to see a therapist for at least 5 visits so I could work out the reasons why the weight didn't stay off so that even after having RNY I won't gain it back like some RNY patients do and I have to lose 20 pounds. Dang if I could lose 20 maybe I wouldn't need RNY LOL....so saw the therapist already, now working on the 20. This is going to take a while...too boot add an insurance change and here we go again. Start the process all over. I wish lots of luck with your journey :)

My Journey:
10/17/11 - First Visit with Bariatric Center - seeing Nurse, Medical Director, Nutritionist, Social Worker and having blood work
3/12/12 - after being discouraged by the lack of support from the first Bariatric Center....started my journey with the one recommended by my PCP. First info meeting and I think this group is great. Completed my application, already choose my surgeon and looking forward to starting this journey again.
3/29/12 - see surgeon and therapist, 4/9 Immersion Day, 4/12 Nutritionist, 4/23 HOWL meeting, 4/25 therapist (ok'd surgery), 5/15 nutritionist (ok'd surgery), 5/15 rec'd surgery date of 6/6. Pre-op visit and work-up 5/21. I'm on my way!
